Whether in the American Pie movies or anything else, Eugene is the definition of making every scene count. Everything he's been in is better because of him.

From personal experience, I can he was the type of dad that might embarrass you from time to time, but you one day realize exactly how awesome he was. Lost my dad in 2012, and I swear the amount of *MY* childhood friends that reached out blew my mind. Two of my exes who hated each other as teens drove together for his funeral. We were expecting at most 20 people at his funeral. 113 showed up, all traveling minimum 40 miles. He'd never mentioned a single coworker to my mom, brother, or myself. He never once hung out with any of them after work. 34 showed up though, each with a sometimes heartwarming but usually hilarious story.

Its funny how growing up the things I adored in other people was if they were attractive, popular, sarcastic, anti-authoritarian, individualistic, unique etc. And as I get older I realize that the qualities that most people actually want in a friend are honesty, trust, humility, kindness, openness, humour, lightheartedness and positivity. I can say for certain that people with the latter qualities have way more funeral goers than the former.

I always liked Eugene Levy as Jim's dad. Even though the character was incredibly awkward he was always trying to help Jim the best he could.

As I've gotten older, his scenes have become my favorite parts of the movie.

I can understand Eugene Levy's Opinion of not wanting to do American Pie. But I am glad he did it.

It's funny. I was 18 when the movie came out. Eugene Levy's performance was great. He was really funny, however also extremely embarrassing. Now i'm in my 40's and if i watch the movie i don't think about embarrassment, but more that, that guy is a great dad.

@isyt There are regional differences but on the whole it's easier for Canadians to work in Hollywood.

@isyt which is why they get so much work. Its pretty effortless for them given their theatre training.

@Martyn Notman well that involves a bit of extra skill. Personally I’d be much more comfortable acting in my native voice without trying to put on an accent too

Technically speaking this isn't improvising though, is it?

Though it's not adlibbed dialogue caught on camera that is kept in the film, improvisation as a rewriting tool is legitimate. It can be a great way to find more authenticity in characterizations.
